Dogs Jumping On People, And How To Stop It

Here is my article on Dogs Jumping On People, And How To Stop It.

Ask yourself -  how do dogs respond when they don’t like having another dog jump on them???

There are several different ways to train a dog to stop jumping on people.

Consistency is key, never allow anyone to call the dog up on them, it will be very detrimental to your training .

It’s your job to advocate for your dog when needed, and be fair to the dog when training.  Allowing him to jump on one person, but not others, will just confuse the dog and undermine your training.

I DON’T recommend kneeing the dog in the chest as it jumps, as you could damage a dog doing that. You are also standing on one leg while trying to knee the dog- putting yourself off balance doing so.

I DON’T recommend turning your back and ignoring a jumping dog, as they can scratch or knock someone down - especially young children or the elderly. This method is dangerous and is seldom effective long term.

I DON’T recommend holding the front paws and stepping on the dogs toes.  It’s a quick way to get bitten.

I DO recommend taking a step into the dog , NOT kicking or kneeing, just claim your space by walking head on right into them before they get paws on you - it throws their jump off balance as well as establishing your personal space.  I give a very firm verbal OFF command at the same time. This works very well for many dogs.

I DO recommend giving a firm verbal OFF command and pushing the dog off you ( just the minimal amount of force it takes to stop the behavior).
If the dog jumps again immediately give another firm verbal OFF command, and push them a bit harder this time.
Be more consistent than they are persistent.
The dog will determine how hard you have to push them off to stop the behavior, start at that level if they jump on you again in the future.

I DO recommend using an already learned verbal OFF command and a quality low level remote electronic collar as a consequence for breaking that command (providing the dog has already been properly conditioned to understand when they feel the low level stimulation they are to look to the handler for information).

My own personal method, which works very well for me -
When  the dog goes to jump on me I make a claw shape with my hand, give a firm verbal OFF command, and jab the dog in the SIDE of their neck ( NOT in the jugular/throat) with my hand before they get their paws on me.   Works first time every time so far for me. Dogs seem to understand this method.

Obedience train the dog so it learns the verbal commands sit, down, and heel. I recommend using the dogs daily meals as rewards for training. Proof often, and with different distractions and people. Have the dog sit or down before reaching the other person, once the dog is in a calm state of mind have the other person approach.
Keep the dog on a short lead when greeting someone.  Practice stopping and getting the dog into a calm state of mind BEFORE you get to the person.

Structured walks will help tremendously with the problem of a dog who jumps on people.  During a structured walk the dog should be walking on a short lead in heel position next to the handler, no pulling, barking, lunging, or marking. Release word to potty, then right back into a structured walk. I use BREAK as a release word. Use a properly fitted training collar if needed.

Train the PLACE command, which is great for helping the dogs impulse control. Gradually add duration and harder distractions. Use a tie back at first if needed.
Proof often for best results.
Now when guests come to the house you can give your dog a verbal PLACE command, they will go to their cot, lie down, be quiet, and stay there until given a release word. I have a very detailed article explaining how to train the PLACE command.
